Alexandria Commission for the Arts Seeks Applicants to
Serve on Arts Resource Panels

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking volunteers with expertise in music, theatre, and dance to serve on Resource Panels. Members serve as subject matter experts who advise and assist the Commission by reviewing grant applications for various arts programs in the City of Alexandria.

Panel members are expected to serve three-year terms and should be prepared to review grant applications by the first panel meeting to be scheduled in mid- to late- January. The following vacancies are available:

  • Four vacancies on the Music Panel (2 instrumental and 2 vocal)
  • One vacancy on the Theatre Panel
  • One vacancy on the Dance Pane

Individuals who are interested in serving should send a letter of interest and resume, or curriculum vita, to the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 or e-mail it to aca@alexandriava.gov. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008. The Commission will appoint members to these vacancies at its December 16, 2008 meeting.

Art in City Hall
Call to Artists

November 17, 2008 – June 19, 2009

The Art League in partnership with the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor’s initiative to promote the arts citywide in Alexandria, are coordinating a rotating fine art exhibit. This exhibit will
enhance the environment of Alexandria’s City Hall and promote the talent of local artists. The exhibit
will be juried by an outside, independent expert in the arts, and will hang for seven months on the second floor and possibly fourth floor of the Alexandria City Hall. Members of The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association are invited to participate. Former members of Springwater Fiber Guild are also eligible to participate.

Saturday, November 15, 2008 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Alexandria City Hall, 2nd floor
(Please use the Cameron St. entrance at the 300 block of Cameron)

Work not selected:

Must be picked up Sunday, November 16, 2008, Noon- 4:00 pm
(Artists may call 703-683-1780, Noon - 4:00 pm on Sunday, to determine if they need to pick up work. Work not picked up will be delivered to The Art League Gallery at 4:00 pm, and a $5 per day per piece storage fee will be charged.)

Exhibition Dates: November 17, 2008 – June 19, 2009
Exhibition Hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday
End of Show Pick Up: Saturday, June 20, 2009, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (Work not picked up will be delivered to The Art League Gallery at 2:00 pm, and a $5 per day per piece storage fee will be charged.)
Eligibility: Open to members of the above listed organizations. Non-members may join the above listed organizations, with the exception of The Torpedo Factory Artists. Contact information is listed below.
Entry Fee: $3.00 per piece, up to three pieces of original work.
Juror: The jurying process will be based upon originality, quality, execution of subject matter and amount of exhibition space. Juror – Beth Baldwin - Baldwin is the Art Bank Coordinator for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Her duties include selecting and installing art work from the DC permanent collection throughout city offices and public spaces. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is an MFA candidate at Ohio University. Baldwin does freelance design and exhibits her work regionally.
Submitting Work: All work must be ready for display, securely framed with screw eyes and wires firmly attached. No taped or clip style frames are allowed. Works on paper should have a protective covering of glass or Plexiglas. Work will be eliminated if poorly prepared or wet. All work must be original; no giclee' reproductions will be accepted. Works cannot have been juried into previous Bi-Annual Art in City Hall Juried Exhibitions or previous exhibits at The Art League Gallery. This exhibit will apply as one show towards Bin Gallery membership at The Art League for the exhibit year 2009-2010.

3-D artists are asked to contact The Art League to discuss presentation issues. Artists may review the exhibit space (during regular City Hall hours) in advance; please note that corridors have only eight-foot high ceilings. Artists are advised that the exhibition space is a government office building open to all members of the public, including children, and are asked to submit work appropriate to this venue.
Sales: Work may be for sale or marked NFS (Not For Sale). If NFS, a value must be stated in the Loan Agreement form for insurance purposes. A 25% commission applies to all artwork sold. Accepted artwork (not including duplicate works) may NOT be sold directly by artists or their representatives (including through their websites) for the duration of the Exhibition.
Loan Agreement: Artists are required to provide a completed and signed Loan Agreement Form, at delivery of artwork. “2008-09 Alexandria Art in City Hall Loan Agreement” forms will be available at any of the participating galleries, public libraries, and the Office of Citizen Assistance in City Hall. Permission to photograph any artwork for publicity purposes is considered granted unless otherwise stated in writing. The City and The Art League are not liable for theft or damage to submitted artwork.
Awards: The juror will select works for monetary awards.

PLEASE NOTE: Artists are responsible for transport and removal of artwork(s) to and from City Hall. No accepted work may be removed for the duration of the show. Artists are required to pick up works at the times stated. A storage fee of $5.00 per day per piece will be assessed for any artwork not picked up or removed as required.

Alexandria Commission for the Arts

City Manager and Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center Galleries
Showcasing New Exhibitions

New exhibitions showcasing the works of two artists are on display in the galleries at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St., and the City Manager’s Gallery, 301 King St. Acrylic and oil paintings by Nihal Kececi will be on exhibit at the Durant Center through October 31, 2007; monotypes and oil on paper by Betsy Anderson will be featured at the City Manager’s Gallery through January 6, 2008.
